Here the king courts Shakuntala and sets forth the teaching on the eight kinds of marriage. It is telling that scripture, [even] in a love scene, offers a detailed statement of dharma: the eight forms of marriage (brahma, daiva, arsha, prajapatya, asura, gandharva, rakshasa, paishacha), and their permissibility by class. Here one sees that even passion must be brought within the bounds of dharma: the king does not merely woo the maiden but justifies the lawfulness of the gandharva marriage for a kshatriya. Yet note a subtle ambiguity: Shakuntala wisely proposes to wait for her father ('he will give me to you') — that is, she desires a proper courtship through her guardian; the king, however, driven by passion, insists on the gandharva marriage (by mutual consent, without rites or the consent of kin). The gandharva marriage, though permitted to a kshatriya, is the lowest of the permitted forms — a marriage of passion; and although it is lawful, the king's haste (not waiting for Kanva) is a concession to desire. Thus scripture reveals both the lawfulness of the union and its imperfection; and it is no accident that from this haste, later (in the full tale of Shakuntala), the sorrow of forgetting will arise. Here the tradition teaches us the statute of dharma — so that even love may be subject to law.
