पृच्छामि त्वां मा प्रपत प्रपातं ।
यदि लोकाः पार्थिव सन्ति मे ऽत्र ॥
यद्य् अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रिताः ।
क्षेत्रज्ञं त्वां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥
ययातिर् उवाच
यावत् पृथिव्यां विहितं गवाश्वं ।
सहारण्यैः पशुभिः पर्वतैश् च ॥
तावल् लोका दिवि ते संस्थिता वै ।
तथा विजानीहि नरेन्द्रसिंह ॥
अष्टक उवाच
तांस् ते ददामि मा प्रपत प्रपातं ।
ये मे लोका दिवि राजेन्द्र सन्ति ॥
यद्य् अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रितास् ।
तान् आक्रम क्षिप्रम् अमित्रसाह ॥
ययातिर् उवाच
नास्मद्विधो ऽब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मविच् च ।
प्रतिग्रहे वर्तते राजमुख्य ॥
यथा प्रदेयं सततं द्विजेभ्यस् ।
तथाददं पूर्वम् अहं नरेन्द्र ॥
नाब्राह्मणः कृपणो जातु जीवेद् ।
या चापि स्याद् ब्राह्मणी वीरपत्नी ॥
सो ऽहं यदैवाकृतपूर्वं चरेयं ।
विवित्समानः किम् उ तत्र साधु ॥
प्रतर्दन उवाच
पृच्छामि त्वां स्पृहणीयरूप ।
प्रतर्दनो ऽहं यदि मे सन्ति लोकाः ॥
यद्य् अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रिताः ।
क्षेत्रज्ञं त्वां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥
ययातिर् उवाच
सन्ति लोका बहवस् ते नरेन्द्र ।
अप्य् एकैकः सप्त सप्ताप्य् अहानि ॥
मधुच्युतो घृतपृक्ता विशोकास् ।
ते नान्तवन्तः प्रतिपालयन्ति ॥
प्रतर्दन उवाच
तांस् ते ददामि मा प्रपत प्रपातं ।
ये मे लोकास् तव ते वै भवन्तु ॥
यद्य् अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रितास् ।
तान् आक्रम क्षिप्रम् अपेतमोहः ॥
ययातिर् उवाच
न तुल्यतेजाः सुकृतं कामयेत ।
योगक्षेमं पार्थिव पार्थिवः सन् ॥
दैवादेशाद् आपदं प्राप्य विद्वांश् ।
चरेन् नृशंसं न हि जातु राजा ॥
धर्म्यं मार्गं चेतयानो यशस्यं ।
कुर्यान् नृपो धर्मम् अवेक्षमाणः ॥
न मद्विधो धर्मबुद्धिः प्रजानन् ।
कुर्याद् एवं कृपणं मां यथात्थ ॥
कुर्याम् अपूर्वं न कृतं यद् अन्यैर् ।
विवित्समानः किम् उ तत्र साधु ॥
ब्रुवाणम् एवं नृपतिं ययातिं ।
नृपोत्तमो वसुमनाब्रवीत् तम् ॥

nābrāhmaṇaḥ kṛpaṇo jātu jīved |
yā cāpi syād brāhmaṇī vīrapatnī ||
so 'haṃ yadaivākṛtapūrvaṃ careyaṃ |
vivitsamānaḥ kim u tatra sādhu ||
pratardana uvāca

na madvidho dharmabuddhiḥ prajānan |

नाब्राह्मणः कृपणः जातु जीवेत् या च ब्राह्मणी वीरपत्नी स्यात् सः अहं यदा एव अकृतपूर्वं विवित्समानः चरेयं किम् उ तत्र साधुnābrāhmaṇaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ jātu jīvet yā ca brāhmaṇī vīrapatnī syāt saḥ ahaṃ yadā eva akṛtapūrvaṃ vivitsamānaḥ careyaṃ kim u tatra sādhuNeither should a non-brahmin live wretchedly [by accepting gifts], nor does the wife of a heroic brahmin live so; if I, who have never before done this — accepted gifts — were now, in need, to begin doing it, what good would there be in that?

ययातिः उवाच नरेन्द्र ते बहवः लोकाः सन्ति एकैकः अपि सप्त सप्त अहानि मधुच्युतः घृतपृक्ताः विशोकाः ते न अन्तवन्तः प्रतिपालयन्तिyayātiḥ uvāca narendra te bahavaḥ lokāḥ santi ekaikaḥ api sapta sapta ahāni madhucyutaḥ ghṛtapṛktāḥ viśokāḥ te na antavantaḥ pratipālayantiYayati said: O lord of men, you have many worlds; each of them [is blessed] for seven and seven days running, flowing with honey, steeped in clarified butter, free of sorrow; unending, they await you.
प्रतर्दनः उवाच ये मे लोकाः तान् ते ददामि ते वै भवन्तु प्रपातं मा प्रपत यदि अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रिताः तान् क्षिप्रं अपेतमोहः आक्रमpratardanaḥ uvāca ye me lokāḥ tān te dadāmi te vai bhavantu prapātaṃ mā prapata yadi antarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ tān kṣipraṃ apetamohaḥ ākramaPratardana said: whatever worlds I have — those I give to you, let them be yours; do not fall into the fall; whether in the mid-air or in heaven — take possession of those worlds quickly, casting off confusion.
ययातिः उवाच पार्थिव पार्थिवः सन् न तुल्यतेजाः [जनस्य] सुकृतं योगक्षेमं कामयेत विद्वान् दैवादेशात् आपदं प्राप्य जातु नृशंसं न चरेत् राजाyayātiḥ uvāca pārthiva pārthivaḥ san na tulyatejāḥ [janasya] sukṛtaṃ yogakṣemaṃ kāmayeta vidvān daivādeśāt āpadaṃ prāpya jātu nṛśaṃsaṃ na caret rājāYayati said: O king, being a king myself, I shall not desire merit and well-being [won by another of equal might — that is, another's]; the wise man, having fallen into misfortune by the decree of fate, must never act basely; such is a king.
धर्म्यं यशस्यं मार्गं चेतयानः धर्मं अवेक्षमाणः नृपः धर्मं कुर्यात् मद्विधः धर्मबुद्धिः प्रजानन् एवं कृपणं न कुर्यात् यथा मां आत्थdharmyaṃ yaśasyaṃ mārgaṃ cetayānaḥ dharmaṃ avekṣamāṇaḥ nṛpaḥ dharmaṃ kuryāt madvidhaḥ dharmabuddhiḥ prajānan evaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ na kuryāt yathā māṃ ātthaBeing mindful of the glorious path in accord with dharma, and looking to dharma, let the king act according to dharma; one like me, who understands dharma and knows it, will not act as wretchedly as you propose to me.
