Telling is Kunti's 'hidden joy': the mother secretly rejoices at recognizing her son, yet dares not reveal herself — her love is condemned to silence, and this mute tenderness for Karna will weigh on her to the end. It is telling that gaining Karna at once frees Duryodhana from fear of Arjuna: the enmity is now balanced, and so grows bolder. Here one sees how evil, having gained strength, loses fear and dares more. Telling, too, is Yudhishthira's impartial acknowledgment: the righteous man honestly honors the valor of an enemy — 'none is equal to Karna.' Thus scripture closes the tournament, drawing together a mother's secret love, an emboldened enmity, and an honest admission — threads that will run through the whole epic to its fated conclusion.
