तेषां दुर्योधनः श्रुत्वा तानि वाक्यानि भाषताम् ॥

tato virahitaṃ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṃ pratipūjya saḥ ||
paurānurāgasaṃtaptaḥ paścād idam abhāṣata ||
"Having heard those words of the citizens devoted to Yudhishthira, the evil-minded Duryodhana grieved; suffering, evil-souled, he could not bear their words, and, scorched by envy, came to Dhritarashtra. Seeing his father in solitude, having honored him, scorched by the citizens' affection for the Pandavas, he then said this."

Here envy drives Duryodhana to his father -- to poison his ear. Notice the threefold marking of the envier's torment: "grieved," "suffering," "scorched by envy": scripture seems to underline that Duryodhana is himself consumed by the very thing others are loved for. This shows that envy is a self-execution: even before any harm befalls the Pandavas, it already torments Duryodhana himself. It is telling, too, that he goes to his father, finding him "in solitude": evil seeks out the weak, and alone, so as to bend them more surely. This shows how vice seeks an accomplice in a yielding heart; and the blind Dhritarashtra, who loves his son, is the most fertile ground for it. So scripture shows the beginning of the ruinous counsel by which the son will lead the father astray from the path of dharma.
