दुर्योधन उवाच
एवम् एतन् मया तात भावितं दोषम् आत्मनि ॥
दृष्ट्वा प्रकृतयः सर्वा अर्थमानेन योजिताः ॥
ध्रुवम् अस्मत्सहायास् ते भविष्यन्ति प्रधानतः ॥
अर्थवर्गः सहामात्यो मत्संस्थो ऽद्य महीपते ॥
स भवान् पाण्डवान् आशु विवासयितुम् अर्हति ॥
मृदुनैवाभ्युपायेन नगरं वारणावतम् ॥
यदा प्रतिष्ठितं राज्यं मयि राजन् भविष्यति ॥
तदा कुन्ती सहापत्या पुनर् एष्यति भारत ॥
duryodhana uvāca
evam etan mayā tāta bhāvitaṃ doṣam ātmani ||
dṛṣṭvā prakṛtayaḥ sarvā arthamānena yojitāḥ ||
dhruvam asmatsahāyās te bhaviṣyanti pradhānataḥ ||
arthavargaḥ sahāmātyo matsaṃstho 'dya mahīpate ||
sa bhavān pāṇḍavān āśu vivāsayitum arhati ||
mṛdunaivābhyupāyena nagaraṃ vāraṇāvatam ||
yadā pratiṣṭhitaṃ rājyaṃ mayi rājan bhaviṣyati ||
tadā kuntī sahāpatyā punar eṣyati bhārata ||
Duryodhana said: 'So it is, father; having pondered this flaw and seen it, I have won over all the subjects with wealth and honor; surely they will become our foremost allies. The treasury, together with the counselors, now stands on my side, O lord of the earth. Therefore you should quickly banish the Pandavas -- by gentle means alone -- to the city of Varanavata; and when the kingdom is established in me, O king, then Kunti will return with her offspring.'

Here Duryodhana's cunning is revealed -- bribery and deceit. It is significant that he has already 'won over the subjects with wealth and honor': with gold he corrupts the court, turning loyalty into something bought. Here we see how worldly power, driven by greed, corrupts dharma through bribery: what should rest on truth Duryodhana purchases with money. Significant, too, are the 'gentle means' and the false promise of Kunti's return: evil dresses itself in decency, cloaking a deadly design in courteous words (for Varanavata is a trap, a house of lac). Here is the usual mask of cunning: it acts not through open violence but through insinuating guile. Thus the scripture reveals the beginning of a ruinous scheme, dressed up with bribery, lies, and feigned concern.
