मध्यस्थः सततं भीष्मः द्रोणपुत्रः मयि स्थितःmadhyasthaḥ satataṃ bhīṣmaḥ droṇaputraḥ mayi sthitaḥ'Bhishma is always impartial; the son of Drona (Ashvatthaman) stands with me;
यतः पुत्रः ततः द्रोणः भविता न अत्र सांशयःyataḥ putraḥ tataḥ droṇaḥ bhavitā na atra sāṃśayaḥwherever the son is, there Drona will be -- there is no doubt in this;
कृपः शारद्वतः च एव यतः एते त्रयः ततःkṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ ca eva yataḥ ete trayaḥ tataḥand Kripa, son of Sharadvat, will be wherever these three are;

Here Duryodhana completes the seduction, calculating how each righteous voice has been neutralized. His cold-blooded reckoning is significant: Bhishma will stay silent, Drona will follow his son, Kripa will follow Drona, and Vidura, though righteous, is bound by his stipend and alone. Here we see how evil triumphs by isolating the one incorruptible voice: Vidura will remain true to dharma but rendered powerless. It is significant how precisely Duryodhana knows each one's weakness -- Drona's attachment to his son, Vidura's dependence: cunning knows how to read hearts and exploit their frailties. Significant, too, is the final touch: he calls the banishment of his cousins a 'remedy' for his own sorrow-envy -- evil seeks relief not in mending the heart but in the ruin of the one it hates. Thus the scripture reveals the full ripening of the scheme: the father's conscience is suppressed, the righteous are judged safe, and the road to the house of lac at Varanavata lies open.
