वैशंपायन उवाच
अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायाम् अशेषो नागरो जनः ॥
तत्राजगाम त्वरितो दिदृक्षुः पाण्डुनन्दनान् ॥
निर्वापयन्तो ज्वलनं ते जना ददृशुस् ततः ॥
जातुषं तद् गृहं दग्धम् अमात्यं च पुरोचनम् ॥
नूनं दुर्योधनेनेदं विहितं पापकर्मणा ॥
पाण्डवानां विनाशाय इत्य् एवं चुक्रुषुर् जनाः ॥
विदिते धृतराष्ट्रस्य धार्तराष्ट्रो न संशयः ॥
दग्धवान् पाण्डुदायादान् न ह्य् एनं प्रतिषिद्धवान् ॥
नूनं शांतनवो भीष्मो न धर्मम् अनुवर्तते ॥
द्रोणश् च विदुरश् चैव कृपश् चान्ये च कौरवाः ॥
ते वयं धृतराष्ट्रस्य प्रेषयामो दुरात्मनः ॥
संवृत्तस् ते परः कामः पाण्डवान् दग्धवान् असि ॥

tatrājagāma tvarito didṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanān ||
nirvāpayanto jvalanaṃ te janā dadṛśus tataḥ ||
jātuṣaṃ tad gṛhaṃ dagdham amātyaṃ ca purocanam ||
nūnaṃ duryodhanenedaṃ vihitaṃ pāpakarmaṇā ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ vināśāya ity evaṃ cukruṣur janāḥ ||
vidite dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhārtarāṣṭro na saṃśayaḥ ||
dagdhavān pāṇḍudāyādān na hy enaṃ pratiṣiddhavān ||
nūnaṃ śāṃtanavo bhīṣmo na dharmam anuvartate ||
droṇaś ca viduraś caiva kṛpaś cānye ca kauravāḥ ||
te vayaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya preṣayāmo durātmanaḥ ||
saṃvṛttas te paraḥ kāmaḥ pāṇḍavān dagdhavān asi ||
Vaishampayana said: 'When the night had passed, all the people of the city came there in haste, wishing to see the sons of Pandu; and extinguishing the flames, the people saw the burned house of lac and the minister Purochana.' The townspeople cried out: 'Surely this was contrived by the wicked Duryodhana for the destruction of the Pandavas. With Dhritarashtra's knowledge, no doubt, his son has burned the heirs of Pandu, for the king did not forbid him; surely Bhishma too does not follow dharma, nor Drona, nor Vidura, nor Kripa, nor the other Kauravas. We shall send word to the wicked-hearted Dhritarashtra: "Your supreme wish has been fulfilled — you have burned the Pandavas."'

Here the conscience of the people again exposes the injustice of power without fear. It is telling that the townspeople are not deceived by appearances: they at once discern Duryodhana's hand and Dhritarashtra's connivance. Here it is shown that the wickedness of the powerful cannot hide from the people's judgment: rumor rightly names the guilty. Yet it is telling that in their anger the people reproach the righteous as well — Bhishma, Vidura: from outside it seems as though they too 'do not follow dharma' by having allowed the evil to pass. Herein lies the bitter question of the silence of the good: even the involuntary inaction of the righteous before the wickedness of rulers casts a shadow on them in people's eyes. Thus scripture reveals both the keenness of the people's conscience and the weight that falls on those who, knowing of the wrong, did not prevent it.
