इतः कष्टतरं किं नु यद् वयं गहने वने ॥
दिशश् च न प्रजानीमो गन्तुं चैव न शक्नुमः ॥
तं च पापं न जानीमो यदि दग्धः पुरोचनः ॥
कथं नु विप्रमुच्येम भयाद् अस्माद् अलक्षिताः ॥
पुनर् अस्मान् उपादाय तथैव व्रज भारत ॥
त्वं हि नो बलवान् एको यथा सततगस् तथा ॥
इत्य् उक्तो धर्मराजेन भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥
आदाय कुन्तीं भ्रातॄंश् च जगामाशु महाबलः ॥
itaḥ kaṣṭataraṃ kiṃ nu yad vayaṃ gahane vane ||
diśaś ca na prajānīmo gantuṃ caiva na śaknumaḥ ||
taṃ ca pāpaṃ na jānīmo yadi dagdhaḥ purocanaḥ ||
kathaṃ nu vipramucyema bhayād asmād alakṣitāḥ ||
punar asmān upādāya tathaiva vraja bhārata ||
tvaṃ hi no balavān eko yathā satatagas tathā ||
ity ukto dharmarājena bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ||
ādāya kuntīṃ bhrātṝṃś ca jagāmāśu mahābalaḥ ||
Yudhishthira said: 'What is more painful than this — that we are in a dense forest, and do not know the directions, and are unable to go on; and we do not even know whether that wicked Purochana was burned. How then shall we escape this danger, unnoticed? Take us up again and go just as before, O Bharata; for you alone among us are strong and tireless.' Vaishampayana said: 'Thus entreated by the king of dharma, the mighty Bhimasena took up Kunti and his brothers and went swiftly.'

Here again Bhima's strength becomes the support of the exhausted. It is telling that even the righteous, once delivered from the fire, are not free from fear and weakness: they do not know whether the enemy's design has succeeded, and they tremble at being discovered. Here is the truthfulness of scripture: the deliverance of the righteous is not instant or untroubled — anxiety and labor follow after it. It is telling that in their weakness it is their brother who serves as their support: 'you alone among us are strong and tireless' — where the strength of the others has run out, one carries them all. Thus the image of hope also reveals itself: when one's own strength fails, the righteous are carried by a strength given from above (Bhima being the son of Vayu). Thus scripture shows brotherly unity and service in adversity: the strongest, without complaint, takes upon himself the burden of all, and love turns hardship into the joy of service.
