अथार्तिजं महाशब्दं ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ॥
भृशम् उत्पतितं घोरं कुन्ती शुश्राव भारत ॥
रोरूयमाणांस् तान् सर्वान् परिदेवयतश् च सा ॥
कारुण्यात् साधुभावाच् च देवी राजन् न चक्षमे ॥
मथ्यमानेव दुःखेन हृदयेन पृथा ततः ॥
उवाच भीमं कल्याणी कृपान्वितम् इदं वचः ॥
athārtijaṃ mahāśabdaṃ brāhmaṇasya niveśane ||
bhṛśam utpatitaṃ ghoraṃ kuntī śuśrāva bhārata ||
rorūyamāṇāṃs tān sarvān paridevayataś ca sā ||
kāruṇyāt sādhubhāvāc ca devī rājan na cakṣame ||
mathyamāneva duḥkhena hṛdayena pṛthā tataḥ ||
uvāca bhīmaṃ kalyāṇī kṛpānvitam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
"And then Kunti heard, in the brahmana's dwelling, a loud and terrible cry of anguish, O Bharata. Hearing them all wailing and lamenting, the queen, out of compassion and goodness, could not bear it; and with her heart as if churned by sorrow, the gracious Pritha then spoke to Bhima this word full of pity."

Here Kunti's nobility reveals itself in her inability to hear another's pain with indifference. It is significant that another's suffering churns her heart, "as if churned by sorrow": the compassion of the righteous is not detached, it grieves as for one's own. Here is the mark of a sadhu: "compassion and goodness" (karunya, sadhu-bhava) are the very heart of sanctity; one who is truly good cannot pass by a sufferer. So scripture shows that mercy is born not of calculation but from the very nature of a pure soul; and this very pity of Kunti's will move her sons toward the rescue of strangers.
