Here Bhima answers his mother's word with immediate readiness. It is significant that he does not shrink before difficulty: "I will undertake it, even if the matter should be extremely difficult" — the valor of the righteous places no conditions on service. Significant too is his prudence: first he wishes to learn the substance of the trouble, and only then to act; zeal for good is joined with reason. Here is an image of active compassion: it is not enough to feel for another — one must learn the need and rise to help. So scripture shows in Bhima the hand that carries out what his mother's heart has already inclined toward.
