Here the brahmin's despair reaches its depth: unable to sacrifice anyone, he resolves to perish together with all. It is significant that in him love prevails over self-preservation: if he cannot save everyone, then let them all perish together rather than have him buy his life at the cost of a loved one. And in this extremity, as shown here, he chooses not sin but death: a pure soul would rather perish than be saved through wrongdoing. The image of the "ocean of sorrow" is significant — an abyss from which there is no way out by one's own strength. Thus the verse shows the last depth of despair, beyond which there is no more human way out; and at this very moment Kunti stands nearby, ready to turn ruin into deliverance.
