Here help begins with the wish to understand. It is significant that Kunti first of all wants to learn the "root" of the trouble: reasoned compassion does not rush to act blindly, but seeks out the cause. Her calm confidence is significant too — "I would remove it, if it can be removed": she promises nothing impossible, yet does not retreat beforehand either. Here is an image of active compassion joined to reason: mercy that means to heal first looks closely into the ailment. Thus the verse shows that true help begins with an attentive question; and Kunti's composure already carries to the suffering the first ray of hope.
