सान्त्वयाम् आस बलवान् समये च न्यवेशयत् ॥

Vaishampayana said: "Terrified by that sound, the people of that rakshasa ran out of the house together with the servants, O king; and those frightened, who had lost their senses, the mighty Bhima, best of warriors, calmed and bound by an agreement."

Here the victor shows mercy where he could have destroyed. It is significant that Bhima, having crushed Baka, does not turn his weapon against the terrified kinsfolk, but calms them: the valor of the righteous does not revel in slaughter but stops once the enemy is defeated. The purpose of battle is not annihilation but the restoration of order: having struck down the source of evil, the righteous one does not multiply bloodshed. Thus the scripture shows the difference between a warrior of dharma and a bloodthirsty one: the former kills only as much as defense requires, and spares those who submit; and Bhima, calming the trembling, turns victory into peace.
