Here it is disclosed that Draupadi's extraordinary marriage is an ordinance from above, not a human contrivance. It is telling that Vyasa traces the coming plurality of husbands to Shiva's boon: what would be impermissible under ordinary dharma is here preordained by a god -- daiva-vihita -- and therefore not subject to worldly censure. It is disclosed here that in exceptional cases the will of the Lord and the gods exceeds the common law; and Draupadi, a maiden godlike and blameless, will remain a most pure pativrata even within this singular lot. It is telling that this is not an example to be imitated, but a unique event ordained from above. Thus scripture shows that what heaven has preordained stands above human measures; and Vyasa, having disclosed the secret, directs the Pandavas toward the wife destined for them.
