स तस्य मनुजेन्द्रस्य पश्यतो भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
ऊर्ध्वम् आचक्रमे द्रष्टुं भास्करं भास्करद्युतिः ॥
सहस्रांशुं ततो विप्रः कृताञ्जलिर् उपस्थितः ॥
वसिष्ठो ऽहम् इति प्रीत्या स चात्मानं न्यवेदयत् ॥
तम् उवाच महातेजा विवस्वान् मुनिसत्तमम् ॥
महर्षे स्वागतं ते ऽस्तु कथयस्व यथेच्छसि ॥
sa tasya manujendrasya paśyato bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ||
ūrdhvam ācakrame draṣṭuṃ bhāskaraṃ bhāskaradyutiḥ ||
sahasrāṃśuṃ tato vipraḥ kṛtāñjalir upasthitaḥ ||
vasiṣṭho 'ham iti prītyā sa cātmānaṃ nyavedayat ||
tam uvāca mahātejā vivasvān munisattamam ||
maharṣe svāgataṃ te 'stu kathayasva yathecchasi ||
"Before the eyes of that lord of men, the blessed sage, radiant as the sun, rose upward to behold Bhaskara. Approaching the thousand-rayed one with joined palms, he affectionately announced himself: 'I am Vasishtha.' And the greatly resplendent Vivasvat said to that best of munis: 'O maharishi, welcome; speak as you wish.'"

Here the holy one intercedes for the king before the divine itself. It is telling that Vasishtha ascends to the Sun — to where the king cannot rise: the purohita accomplishes what is beyond his lord's power, interceding for him in the heavens. Here the service of the mediator is made visible: the guru carries the devotee's plea to the highest. Telling too is the Sun's reverence toward Vasishtha — "welcome": even the divine honors the holy brahmin. Thus the text shows the greatness of the purohita, who opens to the king gates otherwise unreachable; and in the figure of Vasishtha the power of sacred intercession is exalted — for the sake of which this whole tale is told.
