गन्धर्व उवाच
सा तु तेषां बलान् नन्दी बलानां भरतर्षभ ॥
विश्वामित्रभयोद्विग्ना वसिष्ठं समुपागमत् ॥
गौर् उवाच
पाषाणदण्डाभिहतां क्रन्दन्तीं माम् अनाथवत् ॥
विश्वामित्रबलैर् घोरैर् भगवन् किम् उपेक्षसे ॥
gandharva uvāca
sā tu teṣāṃ balān nandī balānāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
viśvāmitrabhayodvignā vasiṣṭhaṃ samupāgamat ||
gaur uvāca
pāṣāṇadaṇḍābhihatāṃ krandantīṃ mām anāthavat ||
viśvāmitrabalair ghorair bhagavan kim upekṣase ||
"That Nandi, dragged by the force of those armies, O bull of Bharata's line, agitated by fear of Vishvamitra, came to Vasishtha." The cow said: "Me, struck by stones and sticks, weeping as if defenseless, before the terrible armies of Vishvamitra -- O lord, why do you disregard me?"

Here the suffering one questions her master about his seeming neglect. It is significant that the cow does not grumble or flee, but cries out: "why do you disregard me?" -- the devoted one in distress does not reject the master, but implores him for protection. Here is the prayer of the surrendered soul: even in bewilderment she holds to her refuge and awaits an answer. Thus the scripture shows the cry of the devoted, testing the master's love -- and it is this very entreaty that will at last draw forth his protection.
