अपगच्छ पथो ऽस्माकम् इत्य् एवं पार्थिवो ऽब्रवीत् ॥
तथा ऋषिर् उवाचैनं सान्त्वयञ् श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥
ऋषिस् तु नापचक्राम तस्मिन् धर्मपथे स्थितः ॥
नापि राजा मुनेर् मानात् क्रोधाच् चापि जगाम ह ॥

Here dharma and pride collide. It is significant that the rishi does not yield, "standing on the path of dharma" — by custom, an ascetic on foot has precedence over a king, and Shakti holds to what is right; the king, by contrast, does not yield "out of pride and anger." The law bids even a king bow before a brahmana: where power and holiness meet, it is power that should give way. Thus the scripture reveals the root of the calamity — a pride unwilling to yield to dharma; and the king's obstinacy prepares the fatal blow.
