अन्तर्गतं तु तद् राज्ञस् तदा ब्राह्मणभाषितम् ॥
सो ऽन्तःपुरं प्रविश्याथ संविवेश नराधिपः ॥
ततो ऽर्धरात्र उत्थाय सूदम् आनाय्य सत्वरम् ॥
उवाच राजा संस्मृत्य ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥
गच्छामुष्मिन्न् असौ देशे ब्राह्मणो मां प्रतीक्षते ॥
अन्नार्थी त्वं तम् अन्नेन समांसेनोपपादय ॥
antargataṃ tu tad rājñas tadā brāhmaṇabhāṣitam ||
so 'ntaḥpuraṃ praviśyātha saṃviveśa narādhipaḥ ||
tato 'rdharātra utthāya sūdam ānāyya satvaram ||
uvāca rājā saṃsmṛtya brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutam ||
gacchāmuṣminn asau deśe brāhmaṇo māṃ pratīkṣate ||
annārthī tvaṃ tam annena samāṃsenopapādaya ||
"But that word of the brahmana remained in the king's memory; entering the inner chamber, the lord of men lay down to rest. Then, rising at midnight, hastily summoning the cook, the king, remembering what he had promised the brahmana, said: 'Go: in that place the brahmana awaits me, longing for food; provide him with food with meat.'"

Here faithfulness to a given word is the last glimmer of good in the possessed man. It is significant that the king, in the middle of the night, remembers his promise and hastens to fulfill it: even under the rakshasa's power, there lives in him a concern to keep his word to the guest. We see that even in the fallen, conscience does not entirely go out. But the scripture at once reveals the tragedy: a good intention, falling into the hands of an evil power, will turn into horror — for the indwelling demon will pervert the very fulfillment of the vow.
