Here Arjuna's perplexity is resolved: the niyoga was compelled by the curse. It is telling that the king turned to Vasishtha not out of whim but 'burdened by the calamity of the curse': he himself could not beget an heir without perishing, and so, by the very word of the curse, he resorted to the sage. Here it is shown that Vasishtha, too, acted not out of passion but in fulfillment of what was foreordained and of the duty to continue the lineage: where the ordinary path is barred by fate, an extraordinary means is permitted. Thus scripture reveals that the seeming violation of dharma was the fulfillment of the unavoidable; and the Gandharva's answer removes the scandal by showing the dharmic foundation of the niyoga.
