हाहाकृतं तद् धनुषा दृढेन; निष्पिष्टभग्नाङ्गदकुण्डलं च ॥
कृष्णानिमित्तं विनिवृत्तभावं; राज्ञां तदा मण्डलम् आर्तम् आसीत् ॥
तस्मिंस् तु संभ्रान्तजने समाजे; निक्षिप्तवादेषु नराधिपेषु ॥
कुन्तीसुतो जिष्णुर् इयेष कर्तुं; सज्यं धनुस् तत् सशरं स वीरः ॥
hāhākṛtaṃ tad dhanuṣā dṛḍhena; niṣpiṣṭabhagnāṅgadakuṇḍalaṃ ca ||
kṛṣṇānimittaṃ vinivṛttabhāvaṃ; rājñāṃ tadā maṇḍalam ārtam āsīt ||
tasmiṃs tu saṃbhrāntajane samāje; nikṣiptavādeṣu narādhipeṣu ||
kuntīsuto jiṣṇur iyeṣa kartuṃ; sajyaṃ dhanus tat saśaraṃ sa vīraḥ ||
"Everything resounded with cries of 'ha-ha!'; by the mighty bow their armlets and earrings were crushed and broken, and the circle of kings, their purpose toward Krishna thwarted, fell into distress. And when, in that assembly, the people were in confusion, and the lords of men had abandoned their claims, the son of Kunti, Jishnu, that hero, resolved to string that bow together with its arrow."

Here, when the strong have withdrawn, the hidden hero comes forward. It is telling that Arjuna rises only after all the kings have been humbled: true strength shows itself where the pretended kind has run out. Here one sees the ordinary course of providence: first the vanity of the proud is exposed, and only then does the humble chosen one arise. It is telling that it is not a crowned king who rises but a youth in a brahmin's rags: greatness arrives unnoticed. Thus the scripture shows the turning point -- from the humbling of many to the triumph of one; and Arjuna, unseen until now, takes a step that will change everything.
