पाञ्चालराजस्य सुताम् अधर्मो; न चोपवर्तेत नभूतपूर्वः ॥

Kunti said: "This maiden, daughter of King Drupada, has been presented to me by your younger brothers; and, as usual, through inadvertence I said, 'Enjoy this together,' O king. Tell me, O bull of the Kurus, how it may be that I have not spoken an untruth this day, and how no adharma unheard-of before may fall upon the daughter of the Panchala king."

Here a mother entrusts her difficulty to the wisdom of her eldest son. It is significant that Kunti, not knowing the way out herself, seeks it from Yudhishthira, king of dharma: where understanding is troubled, one turns to the wisest. Significant too is the substance of her concern: to preserve both the truthfulness of her word and the purity of the maiden — so that neither falsehood nor adharma should stain anyone. Here true dharma seeks to preserve everything at once — both truth and innocence. Thus the text shows a mother's humility in placing the matter before the wisest for judgment; and her difficulty opens the way to Yudhishthira's decision.
