राजन् निःसंशयं श्रेयो वाच्यस् त्वम् असि बान्धवैः ॥
न त्व् अशुश्रूषमाणेषु वाक्यं संप्रतितिष्ठति ॥
हितं हि तव तद् वाक्यम् उक्तवान् कुरुसत्तमः ॥
भीष्मः शांतनवो राजन् प्रतिगृह्णासि तन् न च ॥

Here appears the sorrow of good counsel before a deaf heart. The phrase is telling: 'a word does not take root in one unwilling to hear it' -- beneficial instruction bears no fruit for one who has shut his ears. It becomes clear that the trouble lies not in a lack of wise counselors but in the unreadiness to heed them. Thus the text reveals the root cause of the Kurus' ruin; and Bhishma's rejected word is the beginning of their doom.
