किम्-द्रव्याः ताः सभाः ब्रह्मन्kim-dravyāḥ tāḥ sabhāḥ brahmanof what are those halls made, O brahmin,
किम्-विस्ताराः किम्-आयताःkim-vistārāḥ kim-āyatāḥhow wide, how long,
पितामहम् च के तस्याम्pitāmaham ca ke tasyāmand the Grandsire [Brahma] — who, in that
सभायाम् पर्युपासतेsabhāyām paryupāsatehall, surrounds [reveres]?
वासवम् देव-राजम् चvāsavam deva-rājam caVasava, the king of gods [Indra],
यमम् वैवस्वतम् च केyamam vaivasvatam ca keand Yama Vaivasvata — who,
वरुणम् च कुबेरम् चvaruṇam ca kuberam caand Varuna, and Kubera
सभायाम् पर्युपासतेsabhāyām paryupāsatesurround [them] in [their] hall?
एतत् सर्वम् यथा-तत्त्वम्etat sarvam yathā-tattvamall this, as it truly is,
देव-ऋषे वदतः तवdeva-ṛṣe vadataḥ tavaO deva-rishi, from your own lips, as you speak,
श्रोतुम् इच्छाम सहिताःśrotum icchāma sahitāḥwe wish to hear together,

Here the question is directed not at the splendor of the halls but at who dwells within them. It is significant that the king's curiosity is drawn toward the host of inhabitants of the celestial worlds: the worth of an abode lies in its dwellers, not in its gems. Thus the scripture raises attention from matter to souls; and Narada begins his account in order.
