तं दुर्बलतरो राजा कथं पार्थ उपैष्यति ॥

पशूनाम् इव का प्रीतिर् जीविते भरतर्षभ ॥

"Thus Jarasandha has brought all under his sway — no fewer than a hundred [kings]; how, o Partha, will a weaker king approach [confront] him? What joy is there in life for kings sprinkled [for sacrifice] and cleansed [purified], like cattle, in the house of Pashupati, o bull of the Bharatas?"

Here compassion for the captives reaches its height: kings turned into sacrificial cattle. It is significant that Krishna appeals to pity — "what joy is there in their life?": faced with such wickedness, silence is impossible. Thus the scripture reveals compassion as a spur to deliverance; and further — of valorous death and the duty of protection.
