जरासंधबलं प्राप्य दुष्पारं भीमविक्रमम् ॥
श्रमो हि वः पराजय्यात् किम् उ तत्र विचेष्टितम् ॥
अस्मिन्न् अर्थान्तरे युक्तम् अनर्थः प्रतिपद्यते ॥
यथाहं विमृशाम्य् एकस् तत् तावच् छ्रूयतां मम ॥
संन्यासं रोचये साधु कार्यस्यास्य जनार्दन ॥
प्रतिहन्ति मनो मे ऽद्य राजसूयो दुरासदः ॥

अस्मिन् अर्थ-अन्तरे युक्तम्asmin artha-antare yuktamin this turn of affairs, [that] which seems fitting [and promises gain],

यथा अहम् विमृशामि एकःyathā aham vimṛśāmi ekaḥas I, alone, reflect,

तत् तावत् श्रूयताम् ममtat tāvat śrūyatām mamalet that be heard from me;

संन्यासम् रोचये साधुsaṃnyāsam rocaye sādhuI approve renunciation as the good [course]

कार्यस्य अस्य जनार्दनkāryasya asya janārdanaregarding this undertaking, O Janardana;

प्रतिहन्ति मनः मे अद्यpratihanti manaḥ me adyait strikes [oppresses] my mind now—

Traducción

"Encountering Jarasandha's unconquerable army of fearsome might, your effort could end in defeat—what then of the outcome? In this affair, what seems to promise gain turns into misfortune; hear now what I, alone, have considered: I favor abandoning this undertaking as the wiser course, O Janardana; the hard-to-attain Rajasuya weighs on my mind today."

Comentario

Here caution shades into despondency: the king leans toward abandoning the undertaking. Tellingly, even a righteous man, weighing dangers too heavily, can fall into faintheartedness: fear for the outcome paralyzes a good deed. Scripture thus shows that even a good heart needs encouragement toward its duty; what follows is Arjuna's reply.
