प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजां पार्थिवाद् भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
उवाच मागधं राजन् प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥
सर्वम् एतन् मया राजन् विज्ञातं ज्ञानचक्षुषा ॥
पुत्रस् तु शृणु राजेन्द्र यादृशो ऽयं भविष्यति ॥

Chandakaushika said: 'Having accepted that honor from the king, the lord sage said to the Magadha [king] with a rejoicing soul: "All this, O king, has been known by me through the eye of knowledge; but hear, O lord of kings, what this son will be like."'

Here the sage foresees what is to come 'through the eye of knowledge.' It is significant that the seer knows what has not yet happened: austerity opens an inner vision inaccessible to the flesh. Scripture thus shows the gift of foresight as the fruit of tapas; and next comes the prophecy itself.
