एवम् ब्रुवन् एव मुनिःevam bruvan eva muniḥhaving said this, the sage,
स्व-कार्य-अर्थम् विचिन्तयन्sva-kārya-artham vicintayanthinking of his own purpose,
विसर्जयाम् आस नृपम्visarjayām āsa nṛpamdismissed the king,
बृहद्रथम् अथ अरिहन्bṛhadratham atha arihanBrihadratha, O destroyer of foes;
प्रविश्य नगरम् च एवpraviśya nagaram ca evaand, entering the city,
ज्ञाति-संबन्धिभिः वृतःjñāti-saṃbandhibhiḥ vṛtaḥsurrounded by kinsmen and relatives,
अभिषिच्य जरासंधम्abhiṣicya jarāsaṃdhamhaving anointed Jarasandha,
मगध-अधिपतिः तदाmagadha-adhipatiḥ tadāthen the lord of Magadha,
बृहद्रथः नर-पतिःbṛhadrathaḥ nara-patiḥBrihadratha, the sovereign,
पराम् निर्वृतिम् आययौparām nirvṛtim āyayauattained supreme peace;
अभिषिक्ते जरासंधेabhiṣikte jarāsaṃdhewhen Jarasandha had been anointed,
तदा राजा बृहद्रथःtadā rājā bṛhadrathaḥthen King Brihadratha,

Here the king, having fulfilled his duty of continuing the line, withdraws to austerity. It is significant that, having handed over power, he does not cling to the throne but turns to the highest: one who has fulfilled his worldly duty is free to seek the spiritual. Scripture thus shows the good order of life — labor, and then renunciation; and next comes the rise of Jarasandha.
