वैशंपायन उवाच
ततो ऽभिषेचनीये ऽह्नि ब्राह्मणा राजभिः सह ॥
अन्तर्वेदीं प्रविविशुः सत्कारार्थं महर्षयः ॥
नारदप्रमुखास् तस्याम् अन्तर्वेद्यां महात्मनः ॥
समासीनाः शुशुभिरे सह राजर्षिभिस् तदा ॥
समेता ब्रह्मभवने देवा देवर्षयो यथा ॥
कर्मान्तरम् उपासन्तो जजल्पुर् अमितौजसः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tato 'bhiṣecanīye 'hni brāhmaṇā rājabhiḥ saha ||
antarvedīṃ praviviśuḥ satkārārthaṃ maharṣayaḥ ||
nāradapramukhās tasyām antarvedyāṃ mahātmanaḥ ||
samāsīnāḥ śuśubhire saha rājarṣibhis tadā ||
sametā brahmabhavane devā devarṣayo yathā ||
karmāntaram upāsanto jajalpur amitaujasaḥ ||
Then, on the day of consecration, the brahmins with the kings, the great sages, entered the inner sacrificial chamber for the sake of honors. With Narada foremost, having taken their seats in that inner chamber of the great-souled king, they shone together with the royal sages, like gods and divine sages gathered in the abode of Brahma; and, awaiting the interval of the rite, the immeasurably mighty conversed.

The gathering of sages is likened to a host of gods "in the abode of Brahma": wherever those who truly know come together, an earthly place becomes the image of a heavenly council. It is significant that even in the interval of the rite they do not indulge in idle talk but "converse" -- the time between sacred acts is filled with words on lofty things. The verse teaches that for the worthy there is no empty leisure: even a pause turns into conversation that nourishes the spirit. The company of the wise sanctifies time itself; and a gathering where wisdom breathes is already touched by heaven before the rite itself is complete.
