यद्य् अयं जगतः कर्ता यथैनं मूर्ख मन्यसे ॥
कस्मान् न ब्राह्मणं सम्यग् आत्मानम् अवगच्छति ॥
इदं त्व् आश्चर्यभूतं मे यद् इमे पाण्डवास् त्वया ॥
अपकृष्टाः सतां मार्गान् मन्यन्ते तच् च साध्व् इति ॥
अथ वा नैतद् आश्चर्यं येषां त्वम् असि भारत ॥
स्त्रीसधर्मा च वृद्धश् च सर्वार्थानां प्रदर्शकः ॥
yady ayaṃ jagataḥ kartā yathainaṃ mūrkha manyase ||
kasmān na brāhmaṇaṃ samyag ātmānam avagacchati ||
idaṃ tv āścaryabhūtaṃ me yad ime pāṇḍavās tvayā ||
apakṛṣṭāḥ satāṃ mārgān manyante tac ca sādhv iti ||
atha vā naitad āścaryaṃ yeṣāṃ tvam asi bhārata ||
strīsadharmā ca vṛddhaś ca sarvārthānāṃ pradarśakaḥ ||
«If he is the maker of the world, as you, fool, think of him, why does he not truly know himself to be a brahmin? Here is a wonder to me — that these Pandavas, drawn by you away from the path of the good, deem that to be good. Or rather, this is no wonder — [for those] whose [leader] you are, O Bharata: you, effeminate and old, the 'guide' of every purpose».

The taunt 'if he is God, why does he not know himself to be a brahmin' exposes the slanderer's own measure: he takes brahminhood for the highest crown there is, and fails to grasp that Krishna is the source of brahmins and of their very dignity. It is telling that one who mocks the Lord's greatness measures Him by something small, since he cannot hold anything greater. The verse teaches that a mocker always judges from on high only out of the poverty of his own understanding: it is not Krishna who falls short of a brahmin, but Shishupala's conception that falls short of Krishna. And slander that fancies itself sharp only reveals the narrowness of the slanderer — he measures the Immeasurable by his own small measure, and marvels that it does not fit.
