To the insolent challenge Bhishma responds not with a challenge but with a word addressed to his own — to Bhima, who must be calmed. It is telling that the wise man does not enter into a quarrel with the slanderer, but is concerned instead that his own kin not yield to provocation. The verse teaches that in response to an enemy's abuse, the wise man's first care is not vengeance but restraining those close to him from rashness: let the reviler rage, but let us keep our measure. The chapter breaks off on the threshold of Bhishma's instruction — an instruction that will unfold in the next chapter, where the secret of Shishupala's birth and the Lord's vow will be revealed.
