वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा चेदिराजं व्यगर्हयन् ॥
ततस् तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा शिशुपालः प्रतापवान् ॥
जहास स्वनवद् धासं प्रहस्येदम् उवाच ह ॥

Having heard this and more — Vasudeva's words — all those lords of men together reproached the Chedi-king. And Shishupala the mighty, having heard that word, laughed a resounding laugh, and, having laughed, said:

To the recital of his crimes Shishupala answers with laughter — not with repentance, not with a defense, but with mockery. It is telling that even in the face of exposure a hardened heart does not falter: his laughter is the final seal of impenitence. The verse teaches that there is a degree of hardening beyond which even clear exposure provokes not shame but derision; and this is the surest sign of ruin — to laugh where one ought to tremble. He who answers the reckoning of his own crimes with a guffaw has himself shut the door to salvation; and this resounding laugh over the word of the Lord is already the knell tolling for the one who laughs.
