रथयोषिद्गवाश्वस्य शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
त्रिंशतं चोष्ट्रवामीनां शतानि विचरन्त्य् उत ॥
पृथग्विधानि रत्नानि पार्थिवाः पृथिवीपते ॥
आहरन् क्रतुमुख्ये ऽस्मिन् कुन्तीपुत्राय भूरिशः ॥
न क्व चिद् धि मया दृष्टस् तादृशो नैव च श्रुतः ॥
यादृग् धनागमो यज्ञे पाण्डुपुत्रस्य धीमतः ॥
अपर्यन्तं धनौघं तं दृष्ट्वा शत्रोर् अहं नृप ॥
शर्म नैवाधिगच्छामि चिन्तयानो ऽनिशं विभो ॥

pṛthagvidhāni ratnāni pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpate ||

na kva cid dhi mayā dṛṣṭas tādṛśo naiva ca śrutaḥ ||
yādṛg dhanāgamo yajñe pāṇḍuputrasya dhīmataḥ ||
aparyantaṃ dhanaughaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā śatror ahaṃ nṛpa ||
śarma naivādhigacchāmi cintayāno 'niśaṃ vibho ||
'Chariots, women, cattle, horses, by hundreds and thousands; and three thousand she-camels wander there. Various jewels the kings brought in abundance to Kunti's son at this chief sacrifice, O lord of the earth. Nowhere have I seen or heard of such an influx of wealth as there was at the sacrifice of Pandu's wise son. Having seen that boundless torrent of my enemy's wealth, I find no peace, O king, pondering it ceaselessly.'

'Pondering it ceaselessly' — envy has become Duryodhana's only thought. It is telling that another's wealth takes nothing from him, yet it takes away his peace: he is fed, powerful, surrounded by luxury — and deprived of peace. The verse teaches that ceaseless brooding over another's possessions is self-torment: the envious man turns over day and night in his mind what he does not own, and thereby feeds his own anguish. Whatever enriches the Pandavas has not diminished Duryodhana by a single grain — only his peace has diminished, and by his own fault. Whoever has lodged another's abundance in his mind as a rival has condemned himself to a sleepless war with a phantom.
