आजमीढ रिपोर् लक्ष्मीर् मा ते रोचिष्ट भारत ॥
एष भारः सत्त्ववतां नयः शिरसि धिष्ठितः ॥
जन्मवृद्धिम् इवार्थानां यो वृद्धिम् अभिकाङ्क्षते ॥
एधते ज्ञातिषु स वै सद्योवृद्धिर् हि विक्रमः ॥
नाप्राप्य पाण्डवैश्वर्यं संशयो मे भविष्यति ॥
अवाप्स्ये वा श्रियं तां हि शेष्ये वा निहतो युधि ॥
अतादृशस्य किं मे ऽद्य जीवितेन विशां पते ॥
वर्धन्ते पाण्डवा नित्यं वयं तु स्थिरवृद्धयः ॥
ājamīḍha ripor lakṣmīr mā te rociṣṭa bhārata ||
eṣa bhāraḥ sattvavatāṃ nayaḥ śirasi dhiṣṭhitaḥ ||
janmavṛddhim ivārthānāṃ yo vṛddhim abhikāṅkṣate ||
edhate jñātiṣu sa vai sadyovṛddhir hi vikramaḥ ||
nāprāpya pāṇḍavaiśvaryaṃ saṃśayo me bhaviṣyati ||
avāpsye vā śriyaṃ tāṃ hi śeṣye vā nihato yudhi ||
atādṛśasya kiṃ me 'dya jīvitena viśāṃ pate ||
vardhante pāṇḍavā nityaṃ vayaṃ tu sthiravṛddhayaḥ ||
O Ajamidha, let not the enemy's fortune please you, O Bharata; this burden — statecraft — is laid upon the heads of the strong in spirit. Whoever desires the growth of wealth as the growth of one's line flourishes among his kin, for valor is instant growth. Without gaining the Pandavas' dominion, I shall not waver: either I shall obtain that fortune, or I shall lie slain in battle. What use to me now is life, O lord of the people, being unlike them? The Pandavas grow continually, while we are of arrested growth.

Duryodhana reaches the extreme: 'either I shall obtain that fortune, or I shall lie slain' — his stake is all or ruin. It is significant that envy knows no middle ground: it cannot bear simply to live while another stands higher — it demands either supremacy or death. The verse teaches that passion, raised into a principle, banishes even the possibility of peace: for the one possessed there is no 'enough,' only 'all or nothing.' And 'what use to me is life, being unlike them?' — envy has poisoned even the gift of existence itself: the envious man cannot value his own life while another's is fuller. Thus, rejecting the path of contentment his father offered, Duryodhana himself chooses the road leading to war and ruin; and the fateful scheme of the dice game is but the first step upon that road.
