वैशंपायन उवाच
स गत्वा राजभवनं दुर्योधनवशानुगः ॥
उवाच द्रौपदीं सूतः प्रातिकामी व्यथन्न् इव ॥
सभ्यास् त्व् अमी राजपुत्र्य् आह्वयन्ति; मन्ये प्राप्तः संक्षयः कौरवाणाम् ॥
न वै समृद्धिं पालयते लघीयान्; यत् त्वं सभाम् एष्यसि राजपुत्रि ॥
द्रौपद्य् उवाच
एवं नूनं व्यदधात् संविधाता; स्पर्शाव् उभौ स्पृशतो धीरबालौ ॥
धर्मं त्व् एकं परमं प्राह लोके; स नः शमं धास्यति गोप्यमानः ॥

sa gatvā rājabhavanaṃ duryodhanavaśānugaḥ ||
uvāca draupadīṃ sūtaḥ prātikāmī vyathann iva ||
sabhyās tv amī rājaputry āhvayanti; manye prāptaḥ saṃkṣayaḥ kauravāṇām ||
na vai samṛddhiṃ pālayate laghīyān; yat tvaṃ sabhām eṣyasi rājaputri ||
draupady uvāca
evaṃ nūnaṃ vyadadhāt saṃvidhātā; sparśāv ubhau spṛśato dhīrabālau ||
dharmaṃ tv ekaṃ paramaṃ prāha loke; sa naḥ śamaṃ dhāsyati gopyamānaḥ ||
He, having gone to the royal palace, obedient to Duryodhana's will, said to Draupadi, [that] suta-Pratikamin, as though in pain: 'Those [members] of the assembly, O princess, summon you; I think the ruin of the Kauravas has come. For the faint-hearted [king] does not guard his prosperity, since you, princess, must go to the assembly. So, it seems, the Ordainer of fate has arranged it, that both [his] touches [joy and sorrow] touch alike the steadfast and the foolish; but he has proclaimed one dharma supreme in the world — it grants us peace, if it is guarded.'

Even the enemy's messenger grieves and sees clearly: "the ruin of the Kauravas has come." It is telling that injustice is visible even to those in the wrongdoer's service: the dishonor of summoning the queen to the assembly has not escaped even the one under compulsion. And his words about dharma — "it grants us peace, if it is guarded" — are a seed of hope amid the darkness: dharma, if kept, still saves. The verse teaches that the law lives as long as it is kept; trampled, it will not protect, but kept, it grants peace. Here, at the edge of the abyss, sounds a promise: dharma, if observed, might yet save the Kauravas — but they will trample it. Whoever keeps dharma in the hour of temptation is kept by it in turn; whoever betrays it is abandoned by it to the ruin he himself has summoned.
