द्रौपद्य् उवाच
आहूय राजा कुशलैः सभायां; दुष्टात्मभिर् नैकृतिकैर् अनार्यैः ॥
द्यूतप्रियैर् नातिकृतप्रयत्नः; कस्माद् अयं नाम निसृष्टकामः ॥
स शुद्धभावो निकृतिप्रवृत्तिम्; अबुध्यमानः कुरुपाण्डवाग्र्यः ॥
संभूय सर्वैश् च जितो ऽपि यस्मात्; पश्चाच् च यत् कैतवम् अभ्युपेतः ॥
तिष्ठन्ति चेमे कुरवः सभायाम्; ईशाः सुतानां च तथा स्नुषाणाम् ॥
समीक्ष्य सर्वे मम चापि वाक्यं; विब्रूत मे प्रश्नम् इमं यथावत् ॥

samīkṣya sarve mama cāpi vākyaṃ; vibrūta me praśnam imaṃ yathāvat ||
[Bhishma:] "Summoned into the assembly by skilled [players] — evil-hearted, deceitful, ignoble, fond of gambling — [himself] not having taken great precaution, why then is he called one who 'played of his own free will'? He, pure of heart, not aware of the intent to deceive, foremost of the Kurus and Pandavas — [moreover] both defeated by them all together, and afterward [again] consented to the game... Yet here stand the Kurus in the assembly, lords over their sons and daughters-in-law; let them all, having weighed my word as well, resolve your question as it should be resolved."

Bhishma inclines toward Draupadi's truth: Yudhishthira, "pure of heart, not aware of the deceit," was drawn in dishonestly — what "free will" is there in that? It is telling that the wise one, without pronouncing a verdict, still points to deceit as the root: an honest game and a rigged one are not the same. The verse teaches that consent extracted through deceit is not free consent: where there was manipulation, there was no genuine choice. And Bhishma passes the question to the assembly, calling all to responsibility: where one man dares not decide, let the many judge. But herein lies the weakness too — responsibility shared easily becomes responsibility owned by no one. The truth is spoken only halfway; its fullness demands not deliberation alone but intercession, which the assembly will not offer — and so the cry will rise to heaven.
