यद्य् एष गुरुर् अस्माकं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
न प्रभुः स्यात् कुलस्यास्य न वयं मर्षयेमहि ॥
ईशो नः पुण्यतपसां प्राणानाम् अपि चेश्वरः ॥
मन्यते जितम् आत्मानं यद्य् एष विजिता वयम् ॥
न हि मुच्येत जीवन् मे पदा भूमिम् उपस्पृशन् ॥
मर्त्यधर्मा परामृश्य पाञ्चाल्या मूर्धजान् इमान् ॥
पश्यध्वम् आयतौ वृत्तौ भुजौ मे परिघाव् इव ॥
नैतयोर् अन्तरं प्राप्य मुच्येतापि शतक्रतुः ॥
yady eṣa gurur asmākaṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
na prabhuḥ syāt kulasyāsya na vayaṃ marṣayemahi ||
īśo naḥ puṇyatapasāṃ prāṇānām api ceśvaraḥ ||
manyate jitam ātmānaṃ yady eṣa vijitā vayam ||
na hi mucyeta jīvan me padā bhūmim upaspṛśan ||
martyadharmā parāmṛśya pāñcālyā mūrdhajān imān ||
paśyadhvam āyatau vṛttau bhujau me parighāv iva ||
naitayor antaraṃ prāpya mucyetāpi śatakratuḥ ||
[Bhima:] "If this our guru, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, were not the lord of our clan, we would not have endured this. He is the lord of our sacred austerities and of our very lives; if he considers himself defeated, then we too are defeated. Otherwise no mortal walking the earth who touched these hairs of Panchali would have escaped alive. Look at these two arms of mine, long and round as iron bars: caught between them, even Shatakratu himself would not have broken free."

In Bhima two forces contend — fury for the woman wronged, and reverence for his elder — and reverence wins: "if he considers himself defeated, then we too are defeated." Here the highest discipline of love reveals itself: one whose might has no equal binds it willingly with the bonds of loyalty. His anger is righteous, his arm unconquerable, yet he does not let strength trample the hierarchy of dharma — and in this self-restraint there is more valor than in any crushing blow. The verse teaches that true strength is known not by what it can destroy but by what it agrees to hold back; and that loyalty to an elder, even one who has erred, is the fence without which even righteous anger turns into ruin.
