ततो विषविमुक्तात्मा स्वरूपम् अकरोत् कलिः ॥
तं शप्तुम् ऐच्छत् कुपितो निषधाधिपतिर् नलः ॥
तम् उवाच कलिर् भीतो वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः ॥
कोपं संयच्छ नृपते कीर्तिं दास्यामि ते पराम् ॥
इन्द्रसेनस्य जननी कुपिता माशपत् पुरा ॥
यदा त्वया परित्यक्ता ततो ऽहं भृशपीडितः ॥
अवसं त्वयि राजेन्द्र सुदुःखम् अपराजित ॥
विषेण नागराजस्य दह्यमानो दिवानिशम् ॥
ये च त्वां मनुजा लोके कीर्तयिष्यन्त्य् अतन्द्रिताः ॥
मत्प्रसूतं भयं तेषां न कदा चिद् भविष्यति ॥
एवम् उक्तो नलो राजा न्ययच्छत् कोपम् आत्मनः ॥
ततो भीतः कलिः क्षिप्रं प्रविवेश बिभीतकम् ॥
कलिस् त्व् अन्येन नादृश्यत् कथयन् नैषधेन वै ॥
ततो गतज्वरो राजा नैषधः परवीरहा ॥
संप्रनष्टे कलौ राजन् संख्यायाथ फलान्य् उत ॥
मुदा परमया युक्तस् तेजसा च परेण ह ॥
रथम् आरुह्य तेजस्वी प्रययौ जवनैर् हयैः ॥
बिभीतकश् चाप्रशस्तः संवृत्तः कलिसंश्रयात् ॥
हयोत्तमान् उत्पततो द्विजान् इव पुनः पुनः ॥
नलः संचोदयाम् आस प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥
विदर्भाभिमुखो राजा प्रययौ स महामनाः ॥
नले तु समतिक्रान्ते कलिर् अप्य् अगमद् गृहान् ॥
ततो गतज्वरो राजा नलो ऽभूत् पृथिवीपते ॥
विमुक्तः कलिना राजन् रूपमात्रवियोजितः ॥

matprasūtaṃ bhayaṃ teṣāṃ na kadā cid bhaviṣyati ||
evam ukto nalo rājā nyayacchat kopam ātmanaḥ ||
tato bhītaḥ kaliḥ kṣipraṃ praviveśa bibhītakam ||
kalis tv anyena nādṛśyat kathayan naiṣadhena vai ||
tato gatajvaro rājā naiṣadhaḥ paravīrahā ||
saṃpranaṣṭe kalau rājan saṃkhyāyātha phalāny uta ||
mudā paramayā yuktas tejasā ca pareṇa ha ||
ratham āruhya tejasvī prayayau javanair hayaiḥ ||
bibhītakaś cāpraśastaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ kalisaṃśrayāt ||
hayottamān utpatato dvijān iva punaḥ punaḥ ||
nalaḥ saṃcodayām āsa prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ||
vidarbhābhimukho rājā prayayau sa mahāmanāḥ ||
nale tu samatikrānte kalir apy agamad gṛhān ||
tato gatajvaro rājā nalo 'bhūt pṛthivīpate ||
vimuktaḥ kalinā rājan rūpamātraviyojitaḥ ||
Freed from the venom, Kali assumed his own form. The angered lord of the Nishadhas, Nala, wished to curse him, but Kali, trembling and with joined palms, said: "Restrain your anger, king. I will give you supreme renown. The mother of Indrasena, when she had been abandoned by you, cursed me long ago, and since then I have suffered greatly. I dwelt within you in grievous torment, unconquered king, burned day and night by the venom of the king of serpents. Those people in the world who diligently praise you shall never know the fear born of me." Hearing this, King Nala restrained his anger. The frightened Kali swiftly entered the bibhitaka tree, and no one else beheld his conversation with the Nishadhan. When Kali had vanished, the king of the Nishadhas, slayer of enemy heroes, was freed from his fever; he counted the fruits, and filled with the greatest joy and supreme splendor, mounted the chariot again and drove on with his swift horses. Again and again he urged on the finest horses, flying like birds, and with a joyful heart the great-minded king set out toward Vidarbha. And when Nala had passed on, Kali too went to his own dwelling. Thus King Nala became free of his fever, released from Kali, O lord of the earth, though he was still parted only from his former form.

Nala could have cursed Kali, but he held back his anger. Liberation is completed not by vengeance but by the recovery of self-mastery; hence the way to Damayanti now stands open.
