Vaishampayana said: "Then the Pandava, having left the Kaushiki, O Janamejaya, visited all the holy abodes in succession. Reaching the ocean, at the confluence of the Ganga, the king performed the ritual bathing amid five hundred rivers. After this the lord of the earth, the hero, went together with his brothers along the seashore toward the Kalingas. Lomasha said: 'Here are the Kalingas, Kaunteya, where the river Vaitarani flows; here Dharma himself, coming to the gods for refuge, performed sacrifice. This northern bank, served by the rishis, adorned with a mountain and fit for sacrifice, is constantly visited by the twice-born. Here other rishis too once performed sacrifices and by the gods' direct path reached heaven. Here also, O king, Rudra, during a sacrifice, took the animal and said: 'Rudra is the animal; this is my share.' When the animal had been taken, the gods said to him: 'Do not encroach upon what belongs to another, do not destroy all the dharmas.' Then they praised Rudra with auspicious words, satisfied him with an ishti offering, and honored him. Then he released the animal and departed by the gods' path. Hear here the account of Rudra, Yudhishthira: out of fear of Rudra the gods established for him forever the best share, untouched by any of the other shares. Whoever, singing this gatha here, touches the water, to him the path of the gods and true sight are opened.' Then all the Pandavas and Draupadi, the great-souled ones, having entered the Vaitarani, satisfied the ancestors."

The episode with Rudra shows that even in sacrifice there must be an order of shares. A sacred act is preserved when a mighty power receives its rightful place rather than destroying the whole.
