Coming again to this great sage who was tormenting himself with harsh austerity, the god, the crusher of Bala's might, sought once more to restrain him: 'You have undertaken an impossible task; this is not born of wisdom. The Vedas will reveal themselves to you and to your father.' Yavakri said: 'If this is not done, O king of the gods, as I desire, I shall, under a great vow, perform still more terrible austerities. Or, O Maghavan, cutting off limb after limb at a kindled fire, I shall offer them as oblation. Know this: if you do not here fulfill all that I desire, O king of the gods.' Lomasha said: 'Perceiving the resolve of that great sage, and pondering in his mind a way to restrain him, the wise Indra took on the form of an ascetic brahmin — old, having lived many hundred years, weak and afflicted with illness. At Yavakri's tirtha, by the Bhagirathi, suited for purifying rites, he built a bridge of sand. When the best of the twice-born did not heed his words, Shakra began to fill the Ganga with sand. He cast handfuls of sand into the Bhagirathi day and night, beginning the bridge and displaying this before Yavakri. Yavakri saw him diligently engaged in the building, laughed, and said: "What is happening here, brahmin? What do you wish to accomplish? You are making a very great effort, but it is useless." Indra said: "I shall bind the Ganga with a bridge; there will be an easy crossing. For people suffer, dear one, crossing over again and again." Yavakri said: "This great torrent can in no way be bound. Abandon the impossible and undertake something possible." Indra said: "Just as this austerity of yours for the sake of the Vedas has been undertaken, so too has this impossible labor been undertaken by us." Yavakri said: "If, lord of the thirty gods, you consider my undertaking as useless as yours, O Pakashasana, then let what is possible for me be done. Grant me other boons as well, lord of the hosts of gods, that I may surpass others." Lomasha said: 'Indra granted him the boons of which the great ascetic had spoken: "The Vedas will reveal themselves to you together with your father, as you desired. And whatever else you wish, Yavakri. Go." Having obtained what he desired, he went to his father and said—'

The image of the sand bridge reveals the absurdity of trying to shortcut the spiritual path. Knowledge can be received as a gift, but if it has not passed through service and character, it remains a dangerous force.
