चण्डवातं महद् वर्षं प्रादुरासीद् विशां पते ॥
ततो रेणुः समुद्भूतः सपत्रबहुलो महान् ॥
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च द्यां चैव तमसावृणोत् ॥
न स्म प्रज्ञायते किं चिद् आवृते व्योम्नि रेणुना ॥
न चापि शेकुस् ते कर्तुम् अन्योन्यस्याभिभाषणम् ॥
न चापश्यन्त ते ऽन्योन्यं तमसा हतचक्षुषः ॥
आकृष्यमाणा वातेन साश्मचूर्णेन भारत ॥
द्रुमाणां वातभग्नानां पततां भूतले भृशम् ॥
अन्येषां च महीजानां शब्दः समभवन् महान् ॥
द्यौः स्वित् पतति किं भूमौ दीर्यन्ते पर्वता नु किम् ॥
इति ते मेनिरे सर्वे पवनेन विमोहिताः ॥
ते यथानन्तरान् वृक्षान् वल्मीकान् विषमाणि च ॥
पाणिभिः परिमार्गन्तो भीता वायोर् निलिल्यिरे ॥
ततः कार्मुकम् उद्यम्य भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥
कृष्णाम् आदाय संगत्या तस्थाव् आश्रित्य पादपम् ॥
धर्मराजश् च धौम्यश् च निलिल्याते महावने ॥
अग्निहोत्राण्य् उपादाय सहदेवस् तु पर्वते ॥
नकुलो ब्राह्मणाश् चान्ये लोमशश् च महातपाः ॥
वृक्षान् आसाद्य संत्रस्तास् तत्र तत्र निलिल्यिरे ॥

Traducción

As the heroes were entering the mountain Gandhamadana, O lord of the people, a furious wind rose up and a great rain began. Then a great dust arose, thick with leaves, and covered the earth, the sky, and the heavens with darkness. In the sky shrouded in dust nothing could be discerned, and they could not even speak to one another. Blinded by the darkness, swept along by the wind bearing stone-dust, they could not see one another, O Bharata. Great was the roar of the trees broken by the wind and falling to the earth, and of other trees of the forest. 'Is the sky falling upon the earth? Are the mountains being torn apart?' -- so they all thought, bewildered by the wind. Groping with their hands for the nearest trees, anthills, and rough ground, they, in fear, took shelter from the wind. Then the mighty Bhimasena raised his bow, took hold of Krishna, and, keeping close to her, stood leaning against a tree. Dharmaraja and Dhaumya took shelter in the great forest, while Sahadeva on the mountain took up the sacred fires. Nakula, the other brahmins, and the great ascetic Lomasha, in fear, reached the trees and took shelter here and there.'

Comentario

The storm tests not heroic posture but care: Bhima shields Draupadi, Sahadeva preserves the sacred fires, each holding fast to what has been entrusted to him.
