अर्जुन उवाच
शृणु हन्त महाराज विधिना येन दृष्टवान् ॥
शतक्रतुम् अहं देवं भगवन्तं च शंकरम् ॥
विद्याम् अधीत्य तां राजंस् त्वयोक्ताम् अरिमर्दन ॥
भवता च समादिष्टस् तपसे प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥
भृगुतुङ्गम् अथो गत्वा काम्यकाद् आस्थितस् तपः ॥
एकरात्रोषितः कं चिद् अपश्यं ब्राह्मणं पथि ॥
स माम् अपृच्छत् कौन्तेय क्वासि गन्ता ब्रवीहि मे ॥
तस्मा अवितथं सर्वम् अब्रुवं कुरुनन्दन ॥
स तथ्यं मम तच् छ्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणो राजसत्तम ॥
अपूजयत मां राजन् प्रीतिमांश् चाभवन् मयि ॥
ततो माम् अब्रवीत् प्रीतस् तप आतिष्ठ भारत ॥
तपस्वी नचिरेण त्वं द्रक्ष्यसे विबुधाधिपम् ॥
ततो ऽहं वचनात् तस्य गिरिम् आरुह्य शैशिरम् ॥
तपो ऽतप्यं महाराज मासं मूलफलाशनः ॥
द्वितीयश् चापि मे मासो जलं भक्षयतो गतः ॥
निराहारस् तृतीये ऽथ मासे पाण्डवनन्दन ॥
ऊर्ध्वबाहुश् चतुर्थं तु मासम् अस्मि स्थितस् तदा ॥
न च मे हीयते प्राणस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
चतुर्थे समभिक्रान्ते प्रथमे दिवसे गते ॥
वराहसंस्थितं भूतं मत्समीपम् उपागमत् ॥
निघ्नन् प्रोथेन पृथिवीं विलिखंश् चरणैर् अपि ॥
संमार्जञ् जठरेणोर्वीं विवर्तंश् च मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
arjuna uvāca
śṛṇu hanta mahārāja vidhinā yena dṛṣṭavān ||
śatakratum ahaṃ devaṃ bhagavantaṃ ca śaṃkaram ||
vidyām adhītya tāṃ rājaṃs tvayoktām arimardana ||
bhavatā ca samādiṣṭas tapase prasthito vanam ||
bhṛgutuṅgam atho gatvā kāmyakād āsthitas tapaḥ ||
ekarātroṣitaḥ kaṃ cid apaśyaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ pathi ||
sa mām apṛcchat kaunteya kvāsi gantā bravīhi me ||
tasmā avitathaṃ sarvam abruvaṃ kurunandana ||
sa tathyaṃ mama tac chrutvā brāhmaṇo rājasattama ||
apūjayata māṃ rājan prītimāṃś cābhavan mayi ||
tato mām abravīt prītas tapa ātiṣṭha bhārata ||
tapasvī nacireṇa tvaṃ drakṣyase vibudhādhipam ||
tato 'haṃ vacanāt tasya girim āruhya śaiśiram ||
tapo 'tapyaṃ mahārāja māsaṃ mūlaphalāśanaḥ ||
dvitīyaś cāpi me māso jalaṃ bhakṣayato gataḥ ||
nirāhāras tṛtīye 'tha māse pāṇḍavanandana ||
ūrdhvabāhuś caturthaṃ tu māsam asmi sthitas tadā ||
na ca me hīyate prāṇas tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
caturthe samabhikrānte prathame divase gate ||
varāhasaṃsthitaṃ bhūtaṃ matsamīpam upāgamat ||
nighnan prothena pṛthivīṃ vilikhaṃś caraṇair api ||
saṃmārjañ jaṭhareṇorvīṃ vivartaṃś ca muhur muhuḥ ||
Arjuna said: "Listen, great king, to how I saw Shatakratu and the blessed Shankara. Having mastered the knowledge you had shown me, and receiving your command, I set out from Kamyaka into the forest for austerity. Reaching Bhrigutunga, I began my penance; and one day, having spent a night there, I met a brahmin on the path. He asked me: 'Kaunteya, where are you going? Tell me.' I told him the whole truth, O joy of the Kurus. Hearing this, the brahmin honored me and, pleased, said: 'Perform your austerity, Bharata. As an ascetic you will soon see the lord of the gods.' By his word I climbed the mountain Shaishira and for a month lived on roots and fruits. The second month passed for me on water alone, and in the third I was without food. In the fourth month I stood with arms raised, and my life did not diminish — it seemed a wonder. When the fourth month had passed and the first day had gone by, a being in the form of a boar approached me: it struck the earth with its snout, scored it with its hooves, rubbed it with its belly, and rolled upon it again and again."
