Vaishampayana said: 'Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, grew uneasy, pondering the terrible, ill-omened portents. To the right of his ashrama, in a blazing quarter, a female jackal stood and let out a harsh, inauspicious howl. A dreadful bird appeared, with one wing, one eye, and one leg; facing the sun it tore at blood and cried in a discordant voice. A harsh, fierce wind blew, carrying pebbles; all the cries of beasts and birds sounded against the right side. Behind him a black crow cried, "Go, go"; the king's right arm trembled again and again, his heart and left leg stirred, and an ill change befell his left eye. The wise Dharmaraja, suspecting some great danger, asked Draupadi: "Where is Bhima?" Panchali told him that Vrikodara had gone long ago. Then the mighty-armed king set out at once together with Dhaumya. "Draupadi must be guarded," he said to Dhananjaya, and charged Nakula and Sahadeva with the care of the brahmins. From the very ashrama the lord followed Bhima's tracks and saw the earth marked with his signs. Along the way he saw trees broken by the wind of the hero's thighs as he ran after game, swift as the wind. Following these signs, he came to a mountain cave and saw his younger brother, motionless, seized by the lord of serpents.'

Yudhishthira reads the omens as both king and brother: the world speaks to him of misfortune. His wisdom shows in the order of his actions -- leaving the camp guarded before going to Bhima.
