The king of the frogs spoke in verse: 'Do not destroy the frogs, hold back your anger, Achyuta. The wealth of the unwise is consumed by it. Promise that you will not let your anger loose upon them: what use to you is adharma, what use the frogs you have killed?' Parikshit, overcome with grief for his beloved, answered, 'I cannot forgive them. These wretches have devoured my beloved; all frogs deserve death.' Then the visitor said, 'Have mercy, O king. I am Ayu, king of the frogs. This is my daughter Sushobhana. Such is her ill nature: she has already deceived many kings.' The king said, 'I desire her; give her to me.' The father gave him his daughter and said to her, 'Serve this king.' But he also said, 'Because you have deceived kings, your children, on account of your falseness, will be unfriendly to the brahmanas.' Parikshit, having won her, was as happy as if he had gained dominion over the three worlds; he honored the king of the frogs and said, 'I am blessed.' And the frog-king, taking leave of his son-in-law, departed.

Sushobhana's falseness does not pass without consequence: it will show itself in her sons as hostility toward brahmanical power. Here a family history becomes the root of a future conflict with dharma.
