Dharmavyadha said: 'Dharma has shruti as its foundation, so say the elders. But the path of dharma is subtle, many-branched, and endless. When life is at stake, and in marriage, an untruth may be spoken; untruth may become truth, and truth untruth. What brings the highest good to beings should be understood as truth; its opposite is adharma. Whatever act a man performs, evil or good, he will certainly receive its fruit. But the fool, falling into hardship, heavily blames the gods and does not know the fault of his own deeds. If the fruit of actions were wholly subject to a man's will, everyone would obtain what he desires. Yet restrained, skillful, and wise people are sometimes left without fruit, while another, ever engaged in violence and the deceiving of the world, lives here happily. To one, wealth comes while he sits without effort; another labors and does not get his due. After worshipping the gods and performing austerities, children are born to the miserly who long for sons - borne ten months in the womb, yet becoming the disgrace of their family.'

Dharmavyadha does not reduce karma to instant arithmetic. Dharma is subtle: truth is defined by the good of beings, and the fruits of action ripen through the intricate bonds of time and the past.
