'Others are born amid wealth, grain, and pleasures accumulated by their fathers. People's illnesses are karmic, no doubt, though skilled physicians with the right medicines can remove them. Some have food, but because of digestive ailments cannot eat it; others, strong of arm, obtain food only with difficulty. Thus the world, full of lamentation, delusion, and grief, is swept along again and again by a powerful current. If man had mastery, none would die, none would age, all would possess every desire, and none would see the unpleasant. Everyone strives to rise higher, labors according to his strength, but things do not go accordingly. Many share the same stars and auspicious signs, yet in the workings of karma a great disparity of fruits is seen. No one, brahmin, has mastery over this power. The success of ordinary deeds is seen here through karma. Shruti says: the jiva is eternal, the body of all beings in the world is impermanent. When the body is struck down, the destruction of the body occurs, and the jiva, bound by the fetters of karma, passes to another place.'

The body is temporary, the jiva moves on, and karma binds the transition. Thus the world's apparent injustice does not refute the law but points to the depth of unseen causes.
