At the king's command, the shape-shifting rakshasas came out by the thousand and the hundred-thousand. They poured down a rain of weapons, drove back the forest-dwellers, and cleared the wall again. Many of the finest vanaras fell, pierced by spears; rakshasas fell beneath broken pillars and gates. Hand-to-hand combat broke out: the warriors seized one another by the hair, tearing with nails and teeth. The slain vanaras and rakshasas, groaning, fell to the ground and would not let go of one another. Rama poured down nets of arrows as a cloud pours rain, and they struck down the night-wanderers in Lanka. Lakshmana, with his firm bow and iron arrows, singled out the rakshasas on the ramparts and brought them down. After this crushing assault on Lanka, having already gained the advantage, Rama ordered the troops to withdraw.
