Vaishampayana said: "Then the mighty hero took the bracelets from his arms and fastened onto his fine palms the guards that gave a many-toned drumming sound. His dark, wavy hair he bound up with a white cloth. Swiftly stringing the Gandiva, he shook the bow. As the bow was drawn, a great sound arose, as if a mighty mountain had been struck by another mountain. The earth grew thunderous, and on every side the wind blew fiercely; the sky then was filled with wheeling birds, and the great trees trembled. The Kurus recognized that sound, a crash like a thunderbolt, when Arjuna, standing on his chariot, drew the best of bows with both arms."

The sound of the Gandiva announces what words had already revealed to Uttara: Arjuna has returned. For friends it is protection; for enemies, the memory of a strength no one can mistake.
