Bhishma said: 'Drona sees well, and Kripa perceives well. Karna, for his part, wishes to fight properly, according to the kshatriya's dharma. A discerning man should not reproach his teacher. But one should fight only after weighing place and time -- such is my judgment. When a man has five foes equal to the sun, all eager to strike, how could a wise man fail to be shaken at their rising? For the sake of their own advantage, all men grow confused, even those who know dharma. Therefore, O king, I say this word to you, if it pleases you. What Karna said to us was spoken only to kindle his own fire. Let the teacher's son forgive; a great task is at hand. This is no time for discord, now that the son of Kunti has drawn near. You must forgive everything, both the teacher and Kripa. Your mastery of weapons is like the light in the sun; just as the moon's mark can never be taken from it, so in you brahminhood and the brahmastra stand firmly established. On one side are the four Vedas, on the other kshatriya strength -- and we have never heard of both being found completely together anywhere except in the teacher of the Bharatas together with his son; such is my judgment. The brahmastra together with the Vedas -- this is seen nowhere else. Let the teacher's son forgive; this is no time for division among our own. Let us all fight together against the son of Pakashasana who has come. Of the calamities of an army that the wise have named, the chief is discord; it is held by the learned to be the most sinful of all.'

Bhishma holds the camp together against collapse. In this critical moment his wisdom lies not in choosing a favored side but in preserving order among those blinded by dispute.
