तं चित्रसेनो विशिखैर् विपाठैः; संग्रामजिच् छत्रुसहो जयश् च ॥
प्रत्युद्ययुर् भारतम् आपतन्तं; महारथाः कर्णम् अभीप्समानाः ॥
ततः स तेषां पुरुषप्रवीरः; शरासनार्चिः शरवेगतापः ॥
व्रातान् रथानाम् अदहत् स मन्युर्; वनं यथाग्निः कुरुपुंगवानाम् ॥
तस्मिंस् तु युद्धे तुमुले प्रवृत्ते; पार्थं विकर्णो ऽतिरथं रथेन ॥
विपाठवर्षेण कुरुप्रवीरो; भीमेन भीमानुजम् आससाद ॥
ततो विकर्णस्य धनुर् विकृष्य; जाम्बूनदाग्र्योपचितं दृढज्यम् ॥
अपातयद् ध्वजम् अस्य प्रमथ्य; छिन्नध्वजः सो ऽप्य् अपयाज् जवेन ॥
तं शात्रवाणां गणबाधितारं; कर्माणि कुर्वाणम् अमानुषाणि ॥
शत्रुंतपः कोपम् अमृष्यमाणः; समर्पयत् कूर्मनखेन पार्थम् ॥
स तेन राज्ञातिरथेन विद्धो; विगाहमानो ध्वजिनीं कुरूणाम् ॥
शत्रुंतपं पञ्चभिर् आशु विद्ध्वा; ततो ऽस्य सूतं दशभिर् जघान ॥
ततः स विद्धो भरतर्षभेण; बाणेन गात्रावरणातिगेन ॥
गतासुर् आजौ निपपात भूमौ; नगो नगाग्राद् इव वातरुग्णः ॥
रथर्षभास् ते तु रथर्षभेण; वीरा रणे वीरतरेण भग्नाः ॥
चकम्पिरे वातवशेन काले; प्रकम्पितानीव महावनानि ॥
हतास् तु पार्थेन नरप्रवीरा; भूमौ युवानः सुषुपुः सुवेषाः ॥
वसुप्रदा वासवतुल्यवीर्याः; पराजिता वासवजेन संख्ये ॥
सुवर्णकार्ष्णायसवर्मनद्धा; नागा यथा हैमवताः प्रवृद्धाः ॥
तथा स शत्रून् समरे विनिघ्नन्; गाण्डीवधन्वा पुरुषप्रवीरः ॥
चचार संख्ये प्रदिशो दिशश् च; दहन्न् इवाग्निर् वनम् आतपान्ते ॥
प्रकीर्णपर्णानि यथा वसन्ते; विशातयित्वात्यनिलो नुदन् खे ॥
तथा सपत्नान् विकिरन् किरीटी; चचार संख्ये ऽतिरथो रथेन ॥
शोणाश्ववाहस्य हयान् निहत्य; वैकर्तनभ्रातुर् अदीनसत्त्वः ॥

śatruṃtapaḥ kopam amṛṣyamāṇaḥ; samarpayat kūrmanakhena pārtham ||
sa tena rājñātirathena viddho; vigāhamāno dhvajinīṃ kurūṇām ||
śatruṃtapaṃ pañcabhir āśu viddhvā; tato 'sya sūtaṃ daśabhir jaghāna ||
tataḥ sa viddho bharatarṣabheṇa; bāṇena gātrāvaraṇātigena ||
gatāsur ājau nipapāta bhūmau; nago nagāgrād iva vātarugṇaḥ ||
ratharṣabhās te tu ratharṣabheṇa; vīrā raṇe vīratareṇa bhagnāḥ ||
cakampire vātavaśena kāle; prakampitānīva mahāvanāni ||
hatās tu pārthena narapravīrā; bhūmau yuvānaḥ suṣupuḥ suveṣāḥ ||
vasupradā vāsavatulyavīryāḥ; parājitā vāsavajena saṃkhye ||
suvarṇakārṣṇāyasavarmanaddhā; nāgā yathā haimavatāḥ pravṛddhāḥ ||
tathā sa śatrūn samare vinighnan; gāṇḍīvadhanvā puruṣapravīraḥ ||
cacāra saṃkhye pradiśo diśaś ca; dahann ivāgnir vanam ātapānte ||
prakīrṇaparṇāni yathā vasante; viśātayitvātyanilo nudan khe ||
tathā sapatnān vikiran kirīṭī; cacāra saṃkhye 'tiratho rathena ||
śoṇāśvavāhasya hayān nihatya; vaikartanabhrātur adīnasattvaḥ ||
ekena saṃgrāmajitaḥ śareṇa; śiro jahārātha kirīṭamālī ||
Chitrasena, Sangramajit, Shatrusaha, and Jaya, great charioteers, advanced to meet Bharata as he swiftly bore down upon them, wishing to protect Karna. Then that foremost of men, whose bow was a flame and whose arrows' speed was its heat, in wrath burned up the ranks of the chariots of the finest Kurus, as fire burns a forest. When, in that tumultuous battle, the Kuru hero Vikarna, a mighty warrior, drove his chariot against Partha, the younger brother of Bhima, with a shower of heavy shafts, Arjuna, drawing his firm-stringed bow adorned with the finest gold, struck down and shattered his banner; and he, his banner cut away, swiftly fled. Shatruntapa, unable to bear his wrath and seeing that this enemy was pressing back a host of foes and performing superhuman feats, struck Partha with the kurmanakha arrow. Wounded by that king, a mighty warrior, Partha, plunging into the Kuru host, swiftly struck Shatruntapa with five arrows, and then slew his charioteer with ten more. Pierced by that bull-like arrow among the Bharatas, which passed through the armor covering his body, he fell lifeless to the ground in battle, like a tree broken by the wind from a mountain peak. Those bulls among charioteers, heroes broken in battle by a still mightier bull among charioteers, trembled like great forests shaken by time under the sway of the wind. Slain by Partha, the finest of men, young, richly attired, generous givers, equal to Vasava in valor, defeated in battle by the son of Vasava, lay upon the ground clad in armor of gold and dark iron, like grown elephants of the Himalayas. Thus, striking down his enemies in battle, the wielder of the Gandiva, foremost among men, ranged through every quarter and direction, like a fire consuming a forest at the height of the dry season. As in spring the strongest wind, tearing up the scattered leaves, drives them through the sky, so Kiritin, scattering his foes, ranged through the battle on his mighty chariot. Having slain the horses of Shonashva's charioteer, the brother of Vaikartana, he, undaunted in spirit, with a single arrow struck off the crowned head of Sangramajit.
