Vaishampayana said: 'Then King Virata, having honored the Vrishni scion, sent him home together with his retinue and kinsmen. And after Krishna had departed for Dvaraka, Yudhishthira and his followers, together with King Virata, began preparing for war. Virata and his kinsmen sent word to all the kings, and King Drupada did likewise. And at the bidding of these lions of the Kuru race, and of the two kings of the Matsyas and Panchalas, many lords of the earth, endowed with great might, came to that place with joyful hearts. And when the sons of Dhritarashtra heard that the Pandavas had gathered a great army, they too gathered many rulers of the earth.'

This passage (5.5.11-15) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds already against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key figures: Krishna, Dhritarashtra. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an embassy, fidelity to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
